When designing Performance Based Assessments consider:

  • How they can be scaffolded from smaller practice activities to more integrated activities that could incorporate current vocabulary, grammar, and culture?
  • Does the activity reflect Novice, Intermediate or Advanced language functions?
  • How can you take your topic and make applicable performance tasks that reflect all 3 modes (Interpretational, Interpersonal, Presentational)?
  • How can you incorporate "realia" to embed culture into the activity (an authentic article, map, advertisement, brochure, etc.)?
  • How can your Performance task reflect something students would do in the Real-World (travel or career)?
  • Consider language functions required - is the student required to "Create Language" to complete the task?

Below are sample tasks based on Intermediate Tasks (Levels 2-4) that can get you thinking. . .

Read Article on Environmental Topic (online or Authentik magazine) - U.N. Radio - Compare/Contrast Perspectives, Government intiatives - answer questions
Interpersonal
Using authentic menus and provided "Think on your feet" prompts, do a Role-Play using socially appropriate interaction.
Do unscripted Role-Plays using medical/health issues. Write a letter to "Dear Doctor" asking for health advice and answer
Role-Play an interview w/conservationist or a political candidate debating an environmental topic.
Presentational
Demonstrate cultural knowledge by creating an authentic menu w/technology or do a Skit w/an authentic menu found online or in a country (realia)
Create a Health Brochure. Describe a problem, make recommendations, testimonials, etc.
Create Poster, public serice announcement video. Write a "Letter to the Editor."
